Burdene M. Niewoehner, 93, of Sumner, Iowa, died Saturday evening, October 20, 2012, at her home.
Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner, Iowa with Rev. William Runaas, Jr. officiating.
Visitation: 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at the Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner, Iowa and after 9:30 A.M. at the church on Wednesday.
Interment: Richfield Cemetery, Sumner, Iowa with Military Honors by the Thomas E. Woods Post # 223 American Legion of Sumner, Iowa.
A Memorial Fund has been established in her name for St. John Lutheran Church, Bremwood or Donors Choice of Charity.
Burdene Marie Livingstone was born June 30, 1919 at Janesville, Iowa the daughter of Stanley and Bertha (Briner) Livingstone. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church. Burdene attended Janesville Schools and received a teaching B.A. degree from Upper Iowa University in 1940. She taught 4 years in secondary schools before proudly serving 2 years in the Unites States Army Air Corps state side. On December 10, 1945, she was united in marriage to Thomas Leo Crews at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. Thomas died on April 27, 1973. Burdene owned and operated Crews Pre-School at 2424 Garden Avenue in Cedar Falls for 13 years and taught 5 years with Head Start. On July 5, 1980, she was united in marriage to Walter Herbert Niewoehner at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Richfield. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Burdene loved to garden and grow experimental roses, make quilts, play cards, dance, read, watch the Cubs and University of Iowa Basketball teams and volunteer at the Rest Home.
Burdene is survived by her 4 children, Jon (Ronelle) Crews of, Cedar Falls, Charles (Evelyn) Crews of Columbia, Missouri, Carlton(Meredith) Crews of Charleston, South Carolina, and Mary Colburn of Council Bluffs; 9 Grandchildren; 5 Great Grandchildren; 4 Step-Children: 3 Step-Grandchildren; and 7 Step-Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; brothers, Richard and Robert Livingstone; and a sister, Lois McGinn.
